In these 2 months I had 4 clinic sessions compromising between 2-4 kids each session. But let's rewind a little bit, and figure out how this all started.
The Idea
I knew that I wanted to do or start something new, this summer. So I decided that I wanted to coach something, that I have a passion for and have had prior experience with. I literally decided to pick and roll with coaching basketball, for the younger kids in my neighborhood.
Execution
I created a flyer (SHOWN BELOW) with dates, the location, and a little bit of who I was. I distributed and distributed to only 2 neighbors, with young children, that I know really well. This idea was met with enthusiasm, and I them permission to tell their friends about this idea, and email me with their interest.
Now it was only a matter of time before I started getting some responses.
Mistake
It was 2-3 days, and I was starting to get worried, because I had gotten no responses from anybody.
Then my neighbor, who I had given the flyer too, came over, and said " Did you put the correct email address on the flyer". It turns out I put the wrong one!
My face immediately dropped with shock, in response to such a rookie mistake that I made.
I quickly gave the correct email, and then after a little bit the emails started coming through, with interest for the FREE basketball clinic.
Now we were in business!
BIG LESSONS
During the 4 session I held this summer, I collected a ton of good feedback from my parents, and myself on what to do better for the future.
BE PATIENT
This was a huge lesson for me. I had to be patient, while workign with little kids. I learned that sometimes, you had to take a breath and explain the drill a little better.
DOUBLE CHECK ALL INFORMATION
Make sure to check all the information before you give anything. This is probably my #1 thing to look out for next time I do this. My mistake caused confusion with the whole sign up process.
HAVE FUN
The entire goal of the clinic is not only for the kids to have fun, but also for me to have some fun. So many times, these kids have made me laugh, and we had so much fun doing these clinics together.
The clinic wasn't supposed to run the kids into the ground. It was supposed to leave them wanting to come back.
